The Fort Monroe Foundation is deeply grateful for the leadership and advocacy of Project 1619, Inc. in advancing the vision for a memorial honoring the first enslaved Africans who arrived in Virginia in 1619. Their early fundraising efforts and steadfast commitment to ensuring an annual commemoration at Fort Monroe helped lay the foundation for what has become the African Landing Memorial project.

As the philanthropic partner of the Fort Monroe Authority, the Fort Monroe Foundation continues to support the creation of the African Landing Memorial. To date, the Foundation has received generous donations and grant funding toward this effort; however, additional support is essential to fully realize the memorial’s promise and long-term impact.

We invite you to consider making a donation today. All contributions made through this website directly support the African Landing Memorial project.

Planned initiatives include:
Sustaining and maintaining the memorial for future generations
Expanding outreach and educational programming nationally and internationally
Enhancing interpretation through immersive and virtual experiences
Creating a traveling exhibit to broaden access and reach
Hosting symposiums and conferences at Fort Monroe
