The Fort Monroe Foundation is grateful for the work of Project 1619, Inc. in advocating for creating a memorial to the first enslaved Africans who landed in 1619. Their early fundraising efforts and dedication to making sure there is an annual commemoration at Fort Monroe laid the groundwork for the African Landing Memorial project.

As the philanthropic arm of the Fort Monroe Authority, the Fort Monroe Foundation continues to work to support efforts to create the memorial.  To date, the Foundation has received numerous donations and grant monies for the project, however, more is needed.

Consider donating today. All donations submitted through this web site go directly to support the African Landing Memorial project.

Initiatives include:

  • sustain and maintain the memorial in the future years
  • expand outreach and educational programs across the nation and globally
  • enhance the interpretation through virtual reality experiences
  • create a travelling exhibit to ensure accessibility by all
  • host symposiums and conferences at the site
